The front layer of the cornea is scrapped off. This exposes the underlying stroma which is going to be shaped. The layer of cells removed grows back over the next few days.
The laser then shapes the exposed surface of the cornea to alter the refractive power of the eye. Some discomfort is felt after the procedure once the anaesthetic drops wear off.
